Shamisen[edit]

A shamisen (三味線, alternately "samisen", "sangen" or "jamisen") is a Japanese three-stringed instrument, played with a a plectrum known as a "bachi". It is shaped and held vaguely like the western banjo, but does not have the same sound when played.
