Running Daz Studio on a Linux computer. It's a technical page, not a step-by-step how-to, but it's the only thing I've ever seen discussing how to run DS on a computer that doesn't run Windows. --Robkelk (talk) 16:17, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

I am having to do a position change[edit]

So to help make the Wiki work a bit easier I need to change a decision of Rob's about using the category Wardrobe. In the past he and I have removed the category from pages where a subcategory is a better description of what the item is. However as I have flushed out the concept of defining these subcategories the set of subcategories has become large. There are a lot of freebies out there. As the lists of the higher level subcategories have become longer and longer such as the category Accessories I have started to break down the category into finer subgroupings such as head, arm, waist and such. As a result of doing this I can no longer keep the dpl statements within the allotted limits as set by Miraheze and my statement breaks. So for the work I am doing on the Star Trek Resources/Wardrobe I am putting the category Wardrobe back on the pages we have identified as being included in a subcategory of Wardrobe to fix my problem and allow me to write a statement the Miraheze will not spit out because of breaching the limits.
I am doing this so that pages such as Star Trek Resources can be autogenerated. As we have begun to create themed pages such like the Star Trek page or the Sci-Fi page and the like and we have to worry about updating every page where we want a freebie to be listed and right now we need to do this manually. This becomes difficult and error prone. As in the past Kerya has had to fix my oversights when I have added a new freebie source. We have multiple examples of this such as the Figures, Animals, or Hair lists which also require adding the freebies to the figure page or subpage it was originally created for, what cosplay list if any, it should be assigned to, or any other main category page that we feel it belongs to.
I believe that putting back the category wardrobe or for that matter any of the top level categories, Hair or Figure as examples, will not impact negatively on the performance or space usage for the site. Please correct me if I am wrong though. On the negative side what it will do is add more complexity to how a page should be created and assigned categories. My proposed fix for this is to start to develop a document on a dedicated page of how a page should be created. We started this effort in the past. It is now I think time to dust off that section and add to it. I have started to outline the section about categories and their hierarchy in User:Dollygirl/sandbox/CategoryHierarchy. It is bare bones. Just trying to wrap my arms around what we have done so far.
I am making the changes now so please if you have strong feelings that we need to go a different way please please say so. As I tell my friends, family and co-workers there is more then one way to skin a cat. This wiki is not my creation it is ours. So her web pages may be gone although wayback has the pages just not the files and some of the images. Some of her DAZ files maybe gone because Neil was the DAZ guy for her. But she does have some of the poser files. I am compiling a list and we shall see what we can do to bring back her freebies just not her web site. Beside the search box on the page, there's a dropdown menu titled "More". Select "Move" from that dropdown menu, and you'll be sent to a page where you can change the page name. Eblank got banned at Sharecg[edit]

Well that is a relief in some ways. I was worried that she might have gotten sick or something. As to Sharecg I went back and read their user agreement. Kind of scary. Pretty much says that they can do just about anything and you agree to it. I could not find any list of presumed no-no's that included linking to another store's freebie section. The only reason I didn't add them was that I didn't know about them. As for "mature", the only time we decided to not list a mature site was because it had items that sexualized minors and there was no way to list only the items that didn't. It is now possible to search by page categories - no, it isn't, yet[edit]

They are now working on that major change to the search engine. I've told then that, yes, we're still interested once it's ready. It won't happen today or tomorrow, but if everything goes according to plan it should happen before July. How much before, I refuse to even try to guess. "THEY BROKE!!!!" our gallery dpl statements[edit]

Renderosity freebie links[edit]

It look likes Renderosity changed the format for their freebie-pages! The old format was renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/..... now it appears to be renderosity.com/freestuff/items/.... Old links may be redirected to the new ones automatically, but apparently not always, depending on how the old link was formatted... see AntonioCC correction of the Victoria 4/Hair page . I did it manually, looking for the new link and pasting over the old one. And looking at what I have changed, apparently they change the name sometimes, removing spaces and/or hyphens in the names, so a simple search and replace in the edit may not work in all cases. They probably prefer they wander a bit, looking around searching for what they are looking for instead of making a beeline (the same rationale why physical shops change layout so often), in case they may tempt the client to buy something, all in the name of the almighty sale. Making changes to the main page[edit]

What are the requirements for the type of information, design for the Main Page. I was thinking we need a link to what's new on the wiki. Like say we put up a new theme section about mermaids or toys or planes or whatever. Or we finish or are starting an upgrade or offering a new feature. I can do whatever I want on the Main Page... I just usually leave it alone. But I've left it alone since starting the wiki; it's getting old. What do people want to see on the page? --Robkelk (talk) 12:12, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
Things I can see we could do:
* To make the wiki look like somebody is around. Like the example I gave earlier. A latest news section.
* Let's make this wiki about being more of a library. Do little shows that feature something about the different catalogues for example, automobiles or something. Or do a section on the history of a figure, company or on one of the content creators or on a big name creator like AprilYSH and what she offered when she first started out. We have over 5,000 images that we can use. We just need to be a bit more professional in the presentation of the catalogues.
* I have seen requests for space suits that are not associated with a brand name. we could set up a page that provides the guest with a gallery of items that fit that request. Or how about anime?
* We could do a dedicated page on how to use the library. We have a page for a prospective editor but something that can guide a new user or even an old hand through the maze of categories, search criteria and the like. Make recommendations for how best to find what they are searching for. Add a section on how to just go window shopping. Some people just like looking through pictures to see what is offered.
* I think we could do a new logo. I really appreciate 3WC, his examples of dpl statements helped me bunches, but he has been here, left his legacy and now has gone on to other pursuits. I think we ask the community what they think we are and have them generate an image that could be used as the new logo.
* We could do something with the holidays. Special section that only shows up around the holiday.
* Ask the community what they find good and bad about the wiki. They might some more ideas. --Dollygirl (talk) 21:11, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
I'm afraid the biggest problem for those ideas is 'manpower', or rather lack thereoff... I get the feeling Kerya won't be returning. Rob appears to be the mostly technical person, although not 'fully available' and Dollygirl already doing about - what - 98% of the edits? The wiki could definitely use more help (and yes, I'm looking at myself as someone who could and maybe should do more edits, but I'm having a serious motivation problem going on regarding the future of 3D rendering. Well, we can only do as much as we have the ability and time to do.
But I can do something with "Some people just like looking through pictures to see what is offered" right now - we can set up a random image selection on the page. So... pick a few of what you think are the best images on the wiki (not more than five per person, to begin with) and list them on this page, please. Zeddicuss freebie links[edit]

I just noticed that Zeddicuss3D have moved their freebies off of their own website and into a Dropbox page. For now, I've added a note to Freebies by Zeddicuss with a link to the Dropbox. The Unavailable template[edit]

What with the new update to the wiki the Unavailable template no longer has the same effect of greying out the whole page when the freebie is no longer available. I had set my personal preferences to keep using the old front-end, so I hadn't noticed. Maybe we should have a poll - do people like the new look or the old look better - and proceed from there. A bit early for me to tell. I'm used to the old look, and at the moment that looks more pleasing to my eyes. Maybe in time that will change for me. (Scriptsafe blocking or temp. allowing some scripts has it effects on my side, so the experience differs....). Also, I don't think unregistered visitors, which I assume will be the bulk, have the option to change the preferences? About the Babel[edit]

We have been getting on a regular basis the generation of non-sensical categories by a user called BabelAutoCreate. I rejected the enteries and they came back two more times. The last time I just let them sit in the moderator section to see if there would be anymore. Yesterday some one rejected those entries and guess what today there is another entry. what is the procedure for dealing with this issue?--Dollygirl (talk) 18:39, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

New icon at the bottom of the page[edit]

I doubt anybody would notice if I didn't say anything... There's now a "Monitored by WikiApiary" button at the bottom of each page. Clicking it will take you to an external site that (when it's working properly) shows statistics for the wiki as a whole, compared to other wikis. It looks like the autogenerated Table of Contents on a page are gone?[edit]

As far as I remember, there was a ToC generated when you used the == or === ... they don't work anymore.

I see the autogenerated table of contents lists. But I'm still using the old "Vector Legacy" skin instead of the new "Vector 2022" skin. (You can set it at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering) --Robkelk (talk) 15:59, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

The TOC lists are below the standard list on the left side of the page. So you would have the list containing the list of Main pape, Recent changes, Random page, etc then scrolling down to the bottom of the page the TOC list appears. This change made the default for TOC on the left side of the page. The current change also ignores the call in the unavailable template to change the background color to grey as well.--Dollygirl (talk) 16:52, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

I would expect that DAZ3D would want to advertise some freebies, but I didn't see any advertising for these at all, discovering these only I went to their New Releases page and sorting it by price. Before I add these to the appropriate pages, I'd like confirmation that they aren't just showing up as free for me for some reason. Can other folks get these for free?
