I think we should list this, but where?[edit]

Running Daz Studio on a Linux computer. It's a technical page, not a step-by-step how-to, but it's the only thing I've ever seen discussing how to run DS on a computer that doesn't run Windows. --Robkelk (talk) 16:17, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

For sure. I would put it under the Geekie Notes in the Documentation and Tutorials page.--Dollygirl (talk) 20:44, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
I would add this thread: --Kerya (talk) 06:37, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

I am having to do a position change[edit]

So to help make the Wiki work a bit easier I need to change a decision of Rob's about using the category Wardrobe. In the past he and I have removed the category from pages where a subcategory is a better description of what the item is. However as I have flushed out the concept of defining these subcategories the set of subcategories has become large. There are a lot of freebies out there. As the lists of the higher level subcategories have become longer and longer such as the category Accessories I have started to break down the category into finer subgroupings such as head, arm, waist and such. As a result of doing this I can no longer keep the dpl statements within the allotted limits as set by Miraheze and my statement breaks. So for the work I am doing on the Star Trek Resources/Wardrobe I am putting the category Wardrobe back on the pages we have identified as being included in a subcategory of Wardrobe to fix my problem and allow me to write a statement the Miraheze will not spit out because of breaching the limits.
I am doing this so that pages such as Star Trek Resources can be autogenerated. As we have begun to create themed pages such like the Star Trek page or the Sci-Fi page and the like and we have to worry about updating every page where we want a freebie to be listed and right now we need to do this manually. This becomes difficult and error prone. As in the past Kerya has had to fix my oversights when I have added a new freebie source. We have multiple examples of this such as the Figures, Animals, or Hair lists which also require adding the freebies to the figure page or subpage it was originally created for, what cosplay list if any, it should be assigned to, or any other main category page that we feel it belongs to.
I believe that putting back the category wardrobe or for that matter any of the top level categories, Hair or Figure as examples, will not impact negatively on the performance or space usage for the site. Please correct me if I am wrong though. On the negative side what it will do is add more complexity to how a page should be created and assigned categories. My proposed fix for this is to start to develop a document on a dedicated page of how a page should be created. We started this effort in the past. It is now I think time to dust off that section and add to it. I have started to outline the section about categories and their hierarchy in User:Dollygirl/sandbox/CategoryHierarchy. It is bare bones. Just trying to wrap my arms around what we have done so far.
I am making the changes now so please if you have strong feelings that we need to go a different way please please say so. As I tell my friends, family and co-workers there is more then one way to skin a cat. This wiki is not my creation it is ours. You won't bother me if you all want to do something different and I have to go back and make more changes. --Dollygirl (talk) 21:21, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Cosplay or not?[edit]

Paul - Accessoires

--Kerya (talk) 07:48, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

A 'sofa-monster' LoL; my German isn't good enough but I get the feeling it is a private made 'pillow'; kinda cosplay I guess. You tell me, Kerya :)
from the readme
Paul ist ein real existierendes Sofamonster, das im Rahmen einer Nähprobe entstanden ist. Die geistigen Rechte an der realen Figur gehören Centi und sind nicht veräußerbar:
--Glaseye (talk) 13:42, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! A Couch Monster - cute. And yes, the intellectual rights belong to Centi. Reading the Readme would have helped. LOL --Kerya (talk) 07:03, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Chohole's site is gone[edit]

I don't have the time to go through all 159 links to mark them as dead ... volunteers?
--Kerya (talk) 13:25, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
I have been talking to Cho about her site. I would like to hold off on updating the wiki until we have determined that most of her stuff is gone. She is looking at finding a way to recover.--Dollygirl (talk) 14:15, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
Good to hear! --Kerya (talk) 14:23, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
Might be that Chohole won't be able to recover the items; What has happened to the site --Glaseye (talk) 17:35, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
So her web pages may be gone although wayback has the pages just not the files and some of the images. Some of her DAZ files maybe gone because Neil was the DAZ guy for her. But she does have some of the poser files. I am compiling a list and we shall see what we can do to bring back her freebies just not her web site. She has hundreds of files.--Dollygirl (talk) 18:55, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

How to rename?[edit]

At the Famous People page

Mon Laferte SuperPack for G2, G3 and G8M

Should be Mon Laferte Superpack for G2F, G3F and G8F ...

--Kerya (talk) 05:32, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Beside the search box on the page, there's a dropdown menu titled "More". Select "Move" from that dropdown menu, and you'll be sent to a page where you can change the page name. (Leave the "create a redirect" box checked if it appears - we have plenty of room for redirects.) --Robkelk (talk) 12:16, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! --Kerya (talk) 05:12, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

Redeyecat is closing down her blog[edit]

So we are losing another freebie content site but she is allowing people to use and distribute her products. She is closing the blog in a month so if there is anything you want from her best to get it now.

Eblank got banned at Sharecg[edit]

Because she uploaded textures and linked to Adam Thwaite's free clothes ... and it is another store and some admin at sharecg decided that it is competition. I am going through her links as far as I can find them. --Kerya (talk) 05:35, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, Kerya. I've never understood that attitude - I'd think that having the crosslinks would increase traffic to both sites. --Robkelk (talk) 12:52, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
Well that is a relief in some ways. I was worried that she might have gotten sick or something. As to Sharecg I went back and read their user agreement. Kind of scary. Pretty much says that they can do just about anything and you agree to it. I could not find any list of presumed no-no's that included linking to another store's freebie section. I wonder what they do if she had linked to a page on the wiki that listed the link to the freebie. --Dollygirl (talk) 15:33, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
She is okay and has uploaded her newest textures at Renderosity. The guy at sharecg didn't even realize it isn't her own store ... don't ask. --Kerya (talk) 05:00, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

Renderhub is a shop that has a sizable collection of freebies for DAZ Studio and generic 3d models. Shall I add teh links or there is some problem with the shop?. Link: AntonioCC (talk) 17:48, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

As an additional note, the shop has a mature section. So, I don't know.AntonioCC (talk) 17:51, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

The only reason I didn't add them was that I didn't know about them. As for "mature", the only time we decided to not list a mature site was because it had items that sexualized minors and there was no way to list only the items that didn't. As long as the mature freebies are all for grown-up characters, let's list them. --Robkelk (talk) 11:22, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Not that I have seen, most of the DAZ stuff is SFW anyway. AntonioCC (talk) 16:59, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

It is now possible to search by page categories - no, it isn't, yet[edit]

We now have an advanced Search that can search for page categories! I know this is something we've wanted for years, so as soon as I found out about it, I made it happen. --Robkelk (talk) 12:46, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Still a little buggy. Maybe it needs more time to crawl the content, perhaps. --Robkelk (talk) 12:50, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
No, it needs a feature that I can't enable. I'll have to get help from Miraheze staff. --Robkelk (talk) 12:54, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
Bug report created. --Robkelk (talk) 13:07, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
two months later: It's going to take a major change to the search engine to make this work. I've asked them to increase the priority of this, since we aren't the only high-traffic wiki that's affected by this. --Robkelk (talk) 13:58, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
They are now working on that major change to the search engine. I've told then that, yes, we're still interested once it's ready. It won't happen today or tomorrow, but if everything goes according to plan it should happen before July. How much before, I refuse to even try to guess. When it does happen, Search will not work at all while the new search engine is being enabled. --Robkelk (talk) 00:58, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
Good to know!!!!--Dollygirl (talk) 18:32, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
Alas, it isn't happening after all. The folks at Miraheze just discovered a software incompatibility that prevents implementing that major change to the search engine. --Robkelk (talk) 23:38, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

"THEY BROKE!!!!" our gallery dpl statements[edit]

Example of how the page looks now: FacesandMorphsGallery-Free-Victoria 1-2 So what did Miraheze do to break the format line in a dpl statement? gallery is not working. Tried to do a debug and get nothing. I am stumped what to do. --Dollygirl (talk) 19:57, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

It looks okay to me... Mind you, I'm looking at it when the server farm isn't busy. --Robkelk (talk) 13:59, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Still broke for me. I used Chrome to check as well. Does not work. Did Miraheze do an update.--Dollygirl (talk) 16:40, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Note the stat page not populated either. Comes back with 0 data. They have done something to break the wiki.--Dollygirl (talk) 16:46, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
I'm using Firefox, so I'm not seeing what you're seeing. Maybe clearing your cache might help, maybe. And, yes, it was a Miraheze thing - every wiki here that I visited yesterday was hit by it. --Robkelk (talk) 14:14, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
The gallery function seems to be back to functioning but the statistic page is still broke. Not able to retrieve the data.--Dollygirl (talk) 12:59, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
using firefox, the gallery function works for me and I can load the statistic page with data showing.. --Glaseye (talk) 15:28, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
Well then it is a Chrome and Microsoft Edge thing. They both can not see Statistics but the gallery function is working correctly. Rob, did they tell you what they did?--Dollygirl (talk) 02:47, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
I haven't seen anything from them, no. And Chrome breaks things. --Robkelk (talk) 13:46, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Renderosity freebie links[edit]

It look likes Renderosity changed the format for their freebie-pages! The old format was now it appears to be Old links may be redirected to the new ones automatically, but apparently not always, depending on how the old link was formatted... see AntonioCC correction of the Victoria 4/Hair page . How best to handle this?? --Glaseye (talk) 16:27, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

I did it manually, looking for the new link and pasting over the old one. And looking at what I have changed, apparently they change the name sometimes, removing spaces and/or hyphens in the names, so a simple search and replace in the edit may not work in all cases. AntonioCC (talk) 21:36, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
It's almost as if they don't want us to send traffic to their site... <sigh> --Robkelk (talk) 12:33, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
They probably prefer they wander a bit, looking around searching for what they are looking for instead of making a beeline (the same rationale why physical shops change layout so often), in case they may tempt the client to buy something, all in the name of the almighty sale. AntonioCC (talk) 06:52, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

Making changes to the main page[edit]

What are the requirements for the type of information, design for the Main Page. I was thinking we need a link to what's new on the wiki. Like say we put up a new theme section about mermaids or toys or planes or whatever. Or we finish or are starting an upgrade or offering a new feature. Would you want or can you do such a thing?--Dollygirl (talk) 14:19, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

I can do whatever I want on the Main Page... I just usually leave it alone. But I've left it alone since starting the wiki; it's getting old. What do people want to see on the page? --Robkelk (talk) 12:12, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
Things I can see we could do:
* To make the wiki look like somebody is around. Like the example I gave earlier. A latest news section.
* Let's make this wiki about being more of a library. Do little shows that feature something about the different catalogues for example, automobiles or something. Or do a section on the history of a figure, company or on one of the content creators or on a big name creator like AprilYSH and what she offered when she first started out. We have over 5,000 images that we can use. We just need to be a bit more professional in the presentation of the catalogues.
* I have seen requests for space suits that are not associated with a brand name. we could set up a page that provides the guest with a gallery of items that fit that request. Or how about anime?
* We could do a dedicated page on how to use the library. We have a page for a prospective editor but something that can guide a new user or even an old hand through the maze of categories, search criteria and the like. Make recommendations for how best to find what they are searching for. Add a section on how to just go window shopping. Some people just like looking through pictures to see what is offered.
* I think we could do a new logo. I really appreciate 3WC, his examples of dpl statements helped me bunches, but he has been here, left his legacy and now has gone on to other pursuits. I think we ask the community what they think we are and have them generate an image that could be used as the new logo.
* We could do something with the holidays. Special section that only shows up around the holiday.
* Ask the community what they find good and bad about the wiki. They might some more ideas. --Dollygirl (talk) 21:11, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
I'm afraid the biggest problem for those ideas is 'manpower', or rather lack thereoff... I get the feeling Kerya won't be returning. Rob appears to be the mostly technical person, although not 'fully available' and Dollygirl already doing about - what - 98% of the edits? The wiki could definitely use more help (and yes, I'm looking at myself as someone who could and maybe should do more edits, but I'm having a serious motivation problem going on regarding the future of 3D rendering. Not this wiki's fault BTW...) --Glaseye (talk) 20:39, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Well, we can only do as much as we have the ability and time to do.
But I can do something with "Some people just like looking through pictures to see what is offered" right now - we can set up a random image selection on the page. So... pick a few of what you think are the best images on the wiki (not more than five per person, to begin with) and list them on this page, please. I'll take that list and turn it into a "Random Featured Image" section on the main page. --Robkelk (talk) 16:40, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

Zeddicuss freebie links[edit]

I just noticed that Zeddicuss3D have moved their freebies off of their own website and into a Dropbox page. For now, I've added a note to Freebies by Zeddicuss with a link to the Dropbox. We still need to actually fix the links, though - Anything that links to needs to be updated to point to the appropriate folder at their Dropbox page. --Robkelk (talk) 14:05, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Well, that was my lunch break... All fixed, and some newer freebies added to the wiki. --Robkelk (talk) 18:01, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

The Unavailable template[edit]

What with the new update to the wiki the Unavailable template no longer has the same effect of greying out the whole page when the freebie is no longer available. How do we fix that? or should we just let the little grey bar at the top of the page be enough?--Dollygirl (talk) 17:55, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

I had set my personal preferences to keep using the old front-end, so I hadn't noticed. Maybe we should have a poll - do people like the new look or the old look better - and proceed from there. (If people like the old look better, we don't need to fix the template; if people like the new look better, then I have some work to do.) --Robkelk (talk) 12:01, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
A bit early for me to tell. I'm used to the old look, and at the moment that looks more pleasing to my eyes. Maybe in time that will change for me. (Scriptsafe blocking or temp. allowing some scripts has it effects on my side, so the experience differs....). Also, I don't think unregistered visitors, which I assume will be the bulk, have the option to change the preferences? (Haven't tried that out, as I.m 'always' logged in). --Glaseye (talk) 20:20, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
I say fix the template if you want to or don't. Most people are pretty silent about availability and I have not heard anyone talk about the fact that we list things that are no longer available.--Dollygirl (talk) 23:11, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
There doesn't appear to be any desire to switch back to the old front-end... so I'll just leave it. But I should do something about the template. --Robkelk (talk) 12:17, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

What happened to ?[edit]

The entire site seems to be gone. --Robkelk (talk) 11:27, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

It appears they have changed their setup. I could get a file to download, just took some (extra?) steps.;sa=download;dl
--Glaseye (talk) 16:41, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the downloads are zero byte files ... --Kerya (talk) 13:34, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
hmm, and, on my system, norton now blocks the site..... ouch! (good to see you back, btw.... :) ) --Glaseye (talk) 15:56, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
The link to its new home is: ... fixed the links that are updated, waiting for the rest to appear. --Kerya (talk) 07:23, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

We have a spammer that created a page[edit]

What is the procedure for dealing with this kind of thing? Do I inform you, Rob? --Dollygirl (talk) 16:56, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Yes, let me know and I'll take care of it. --Robkelk (talk) 11:31, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
Okay, then consider yourself dually noted. There is a fish in the moderator section to be dealt with.--Dollygirl (talk) 12:29, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

About the Babel[edit]

We have been getting on a regular basis the generation of non-sensical categories by a user called BabelAutoCreate. I rejected the enteries and they came back two more times. The last time I just let them sit in the moderator section to see if there would be anymore. Yesterday some one rejected those entries and guess what today there is another entry. what is the procedure for dealing with this issue?--Dollygirl (talk) 18:39, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

Ooopsie - I approved those entries today, because looking at the difference, they didn't hurt. Sorry! --Kerya (talk) 06:17, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Looks like it is a "genuine" thing --Kerya (talk) 06:21, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Somebody's using Babel on their User pages, and the categories are being created automatically. No worries, I'll approve the current batch. --Robkelk (talk) 12:12, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

New icon at the bottom of the page[edit]

I doubt anybody would notice if I didn't say anything... There's now a "Monitored by WikiApiary" button at the bottom of each page. Clicking it will take you to an external site that (when it's working properly) shows statistics for the wiki as a whole, compared to other wikis. They've been doing this for a while; the button is just us acknowledging that state of affairs. --Robkelk (talk) 20:52, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

It looks like the autogenerated Table of Contents on a page are gone?[edit]

As far as I remember, there was a ToC generated when you used the == or === ... they don't work anymore.

or this Talk page ...

--Kerya (talk) 06:51, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

I see the autogenerated table of contents lists. But I'm still using the old "Vector Legacy" skin instead of the new "Vector 2022" skin. (You can set it at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering) --Robkelk (talk) 15:59, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

The TOC lists are below the standard list on the left side of the page. So you would have the list containing the list of Main pape, Recent changes, Random page, etc then scrolling down to the bottom of the page the TOC list appears. This change made the default for TOC on the left side of the page. The current change also ignores the call in the unavailable template to change the background color to grey as well.--Dollygirl (talk) 16:52, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Thank you both - I am not sure I like the change ... but at least the ToC are here. Kerya (talk) 05:47, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

Free for everyone or just me?[edit]

I would expect that DAZ3D would want to advertise some freebies, but I didn't see any advertising for these at all, discovering these only I went to their New Releases page and sorting it by price. Before I add these to the appropriate pages, I'd like confirmation that they aren't just showing up as free for me for some reason. Can other folks get these for free?

--Robkelk (talk) 22:17, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

They all appeared free when I visited those pages. JHVipond (talk) 02:06, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
I got them for free back in August.--Dollygirl (talk) 04:00, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, folks. I'll add them to the lists. --Robkelk (talk) 11:16, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
