First revealed in the 1979 Ridley Scott film Alien, the Xenomorph continued to terrify and entertain audiences in a series of sequels starting with the widely praised Aliens and ending with the critically panned Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed Alien: Resurrection.

With a brief appearance of the creature's skull in the background of a spaceship scene in the film Predator II, the AvP franchise was then spawned, leading to critical panning and a partial retcon in the form of the "Deacon" precursor shown in the prequel film Prometheus, which people also hated.
